The Top Ten Best-Selling Video Games Of 2015 So Far

Fortune Magazine has complied data on North American retail sales to determine the best-selling video games of the first half of 2015 and the number one spot may surprise you.

Mortal Kombat X, which isn’t one of the eminently larger franchises like Grand Theft AutoCall of Duty, or Battlefield has taken the number one spot . Fighting games in general tend to maintain somewhat of a cult status even at the height of their critical and commercial success. Popular behemoth fighting game franchise Street Fighter sees a steady flow of sales due largely to the competitive culture that surrounds it and also to its game-play design which is considered to be the 2D fighting game standard.

Here’s the full list:

  1. Mortal Kombat X
  2. Grand Theft Auto V
  3. Battlefield Hardline
  4. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  5. Minecraft
  6. Batman: Arkham Knight
  7. Dying Light
  8. NBA 2K15
  9. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  10. Super Smash Bros.

Its important to remember these numbers strictly reflect retail sales and not downloaded purchases. Its still nice to see core fans and a new audience find interest again in a franchise and genre that has taken a backseat for a while. The release of 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9 breathed life back into a franchise that long forgot who they were. Either way, that list is likely to change during the holiday season. There are plenty of AAA titles planed to be released this holiday. Among the releases are Halo 5: Guardians, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero Live and Rock Band 4.
